Ashish Sankrityayan

Ashish Sankrityayan  is an exponent of the Dagar tradition of Dhrupad singing. He completed his school and university education in Calcutta and Bombay, and started his training in Indian Classical music at an early age, first studying the Sitar and then vocal music. He was trained on the sitar by Ustad Mehboob Khan of Dharwad, and received his initial training in vocal music from the renowned sarangi exponent Pandit Dhruba Ghosh.

He was inspired to take up Dhrupad when he heard a recording of the Senior Dagar Brothers, and attended a concert of the Rudra Veena maestro Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. He has received training in the traditional Indian Guru Shishya system of learning for eighteen years, from three maestros of the Dagar family: Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar, Ustad Hussain Sayeeduddin Dagar and Ustad Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar. 

He is now receiving advanced training from Ustad Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar in Delhi, and was recently awarded the prestigious National Junior Culture Fellowship by the Indian National Academy of Music and Dance ( Sangeet Natak Akademi)

Ashish Sankrityayan has given performances of his art in private and public concerts in India and in Europe. He is engaged in teaching instrumental and vocal Dhrupad to students in Europe, where he has conducted several intensive workshops. He has conducted workshops and given lecture demonstrations at institutions like Anton Bruckner University, Linz, Hildesheim University and the Free University of Berlin.

  Ashish Sankrityayan has worked for the Maharana of Mewar Foundation of Udaipur as a consultant, for the restoration and editing of their rare archival recordings of the Senior Dagar Brothers: Ustad Nasir Moinuddin Dagar and Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar. He has made a documentary film Dhrupad: The Call of the Deep featuring his Guru Ustad Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar, and is working on a book on the art under his teacher’s guidance.
